CBD VS. MARIJUANA

Industrial hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. Commercially it has been refined into paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, cosmetics, nutritional supplements and animal feed. Although industrial hemp and the cannabis drug, marijuana are both members of the Cannabis sativa species, they have distinctive biochemical compositions and uses.

Also unique to industrial hemp is the high amounts of phytocannabinoids sometimes referred to as CBD which is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, a prominent naturally-occurring cannabinoid component found in Cannabis Sativa. Cannabidiols comprises up to 40% of the plant. CBD is “a cannabinoid devoid of psychoactive effect.” After THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is by far the most studied natural cannabinoid. According to many researchers, CBD may be the single most important cannabinoid ever discovered.

Phytocannabinoids are harvested from industrial hemp which is high in CBD and low in THC. Industrial Hemp are strains of Cannabis Sativa (L.). that are specifically cultivated for their medicinal and industrial use and have a THC content below 0.3%. Marijuana, on the other hand, is cultivated for its high THC and low CBD content.

Through a combination of these unique cultivars, advanced plant genetics, and cutting-edge growing techniques, an exceptionally high percentage of CBD can be produced naturally and consistently in the hemp plant. When natural CBD hemp oil is produced from these hemp cultivars—which can be grown legally in dozens of countries and imported to the USA legally—it doesn’t make legal or practical sense to obtain CBD oil from marijuana. Industrial Hemp is also now being grown in the USA and distributed throughout the country in a variety of products without THC*.

Extraction Methods Super Critical CO2 is the gold standard!

To obtain CBD-rich oil, you need to extract it from the Cannabis Sativa plant. There are a handful of methods used, but typically this isn’t something customers know to ask about.

Not surprisingly, many companies use cheap methods that involve nasty toxic solvents such as propane, hexane, pentane, and butane, which are flammable hydrocarbon gases found in petroleum. Do you really want to consume this, especially if you are ill?

Some industry insiders argue that organic, pharmaceutical-grade ethanol, which is a grain alcohol, is optimal and eliminates certain toxins and residues in the raw plant material itself. But others say that while this extraction method yields a high amount of cannabinoids and is GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) for human consumption, it destroys the plant’s waxes, leading to a less potent oil. Beware of companies who try to convince you that using these method stays the most true to the plant.

The only way to preserve most of the plant’s trichomes – these are the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids – look for Supercritical (or subcritical) CO2 extraction. This method uses carbon dioxide under high pressure and extremely low temperatures to isolate, preserve, and maintain the purity of the medicinal oil. While this method is more expensive and involves complex equipment and expertise, it ensures quality. Med 7 uses only Supercritical CO2 extraction. This is not the cheapest method however your health and wellness is not something we are willing to compromise.
